Plans that passed the House today are nearly $150 million less than what Gov. Whitmer recommended for state Natural Resources and Environment, Great Lakes and Energy departments.

Budgets passed by the members of the conservative majority in the Michigan State Senate show that certain lawmakers care more about padding corporate profits than about providing our communities with the services they need to prosper. The Natural Resources budget (Senate Bill 839) and the Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy budget (Senate Bill 840) come in at $139,803,000 and $9,261,400 under the Governor’s recommendation, respectively.

The most recent budget proposal moving through the legislature cuts millions in funding from Gov. Whitmer’s budget proposal – funds needed to keep pollutants out of our water and air and protect against chemical spills in our communities.

“Clean air and water are vital to making Michigan an attractive place where people want to raise a family or build a business,” said Mary Brady-Enerson, Michigan Director of Clean Water Action. “By voting to approve this version of the budget, some of our elected officials are making it clear that they value the wealthy individuals and corporations who fund their political action committees more than making our state a prosperous place for all.”Clean Water Action is a member of Fund MI Future, a collaborative effort of nonpartisan community organizations, unions of working people, and policy experts to create shared prosperity for all Michiganders by fully and fairly funding our public services like schools, roads, and clean water.
