Statement on Whitmer’s 2025-2026 Budget Priorities

LANSING, MI – Today, Governor Whitmer’s office presented the details of her 2025-2026 budget priorities to the House and Senate Appropriation committees.

For too long, a handful of politicians have shortchanged our communities billions of dollars; they have rigged the rules so their campaign donors can continue to pad their pocketbooks at the expense of most Michigan families. According to various expert estimates, water infrastructure requires $1 billion per year 1 for the next decade and our schools need $4.5 billion 2 annually to provide adequate education. Maintaining our roads will demand $3.9 billion per year 3, while childcare remains underfunded by $3.5 billion annually 4. At the same time, the top 1% of wealthy households in our state pay the lowest percent share of their income in taxes 5. And, the state has offered over $1 billion in corporate tax incentives to just eight wealthy corporations since 2021. 6

“Michigan families across race and place deserve leaders who will fund our futures and ensure real, lasting investments in water, education, and infrastructure that will strengthen our communities for generations to come. As billionaires and wealthy CEOs threaten our federal resources and sway certain members of Congress to siphon even more of our tax dollars off to the richest among us, state leaders must be bold in delivering for all Michiganders. In 2025, our state’s budget must prioritize our people over the profits of wealthy corporations in our state, making certain that those who do well in our state do right by it and pay what they owe in taxes.
